2024 Dairy safety net program opens for enrollment

USAgNet - 03/01/2024

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced the opening of the 2024 enrollment for the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program, a key risk management tool for dairy producers.

This voluntary program aids farmers by compensating them for income losses when milk prices fall, or feed costs rise significantly. The signup period, which commenced on February 28, allows dairy operators to secure their financial stability against the unpredictable nature of the market through December.

Participants have until April 29 to enroll or adjust their production history to enhance program benefits, retroactive to January 1. The American Farm Bureau Federation has advocated for prompt enrollment opportunities, emphasizing the DMC's importance in mitigating the industry's inherent risks. Various coverage levels are available, including a no-cost option (excluding a nominal administrative fee, which is waived for qualifying producers).

The USDA's Farm Service Agency underscores the program's potential immediate impact, with payment distributions for eligible participants as early as March 4. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to supporting the dairy sector's resilience through effective policy tools.

Farmers interested in exploring their coverage options can utilize the online dairy decision tool or reach out to their local USDA Service Center for more details, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the year's economic challenges.
