Shaping tomorrow's Ag workforce with Indiana 4-H

USAgNet - 03/20/2024

Indiana 4-H is spearheading an initiative to align with the evolving needs of the agricultural industry by engaging directly with employers in food, agriculture, forestry, and related sectors. This outreach is part of a broader effort to equip the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed for the 21st-century agricultural workforce. Employers with at least two employees are invited to share their insights on job recruitment, retention, and training through an online survey available until April 15.

This initiative is supported by a multiyear grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. It encompasses 4-H programs across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin, aiming to craft future educational programs and career pathways in agriculture. Key components of the grant include establishing a youth council to understand teens' perceptions of agriculture careers and examining innovative agriculture programs for youth.

Purdue University, home to the Indiana 4-H Youth Development, is renowned for its commitment to excellence in research and education. It continues to be a leader in agricultural studies, ensuring students and the community benefit from cutting-edge knowledge and opportunities.

This latest initiative underscores Indiana 4-H's commitment to fostering a diverse and well-prepared agricultural workforce, reinforcing the importance of agriculture to Indiana's and the nation's future. Through collaborative efforts with industry partners and educational pathways, Indiana 4-H aims to empower young individuals with the skills and perspectives needed to thrive in agriculture-related careers.
